Multi-collagen: what the types on the label mean

7 min read

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, the scaffolding in your skin, tendons, joints and gut lining. What most people miss is that "collagen" isn't one thing: there are dozens of types, found in different parts of the body.

The five types that matter

A multi-collagen formula exists because no single source covers everything. Bovine, marine, chicken and eggshell membrane each bring a different mix.

  • Type I: the most abundant type in the body, found in skin, tendons and bone
  • Type II: the main type found in cartilage
  • Type III: skin and blood vessels, almost always found alongside Type I
  • Type V: cell surfaces and hair, plus a role in placental tissue
  • Type X: found where cartilage meets bone

Why peptides, not plain collagen

Whole collagen is far too large to absorb intact. Hydrolysed collagen (collagen peptides) has been enzymatically broken into short chains your gut can take up.

That's why the label should say collagen peptides or hydrolysed collagen, and how many milligrams you get per serving.

Make it a habit

Whatever you take, take it every day. A gummy you enjoy and remember beats a bigger dose that sits in the cupboard.

Common questions

Is marine collagen better than bovine?

Marine collagen is mostly Type I; bovine brings Types I and III. A multi-source blend covers more types.

Can vegetarians take collagen?

Not in this form: all true collagen is animal-derived. Products sold as "vegan collagen" contain other ingredients, not collagen itself.

Gummies or powder?

Powder allows a bigger dose per serving. Gummies win on convenience and taste, which makes them easier to take daily.
